The city of Uji, located in Kyoto Prefecture, is famous as the largest tea production area around Kyoto. About 45% of the tea produced in Kyoto Prefecture is grown in the Uji region. Tea cultivation there dates back to about 800 years ago. It is said that the tea trees in Uji, brought back from the Tang Dynasty by Eisai, were the first of their kind in Japan. Uji is a member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Japan. The city spreads along the River, and the mountain slopes covered in tea fields form a beautiful scenery. The steep mountains, big temperature differences and a lot of mist around the valley create an ideal environment for growing high-quality tea. Uji produces the largest amount of tencha, the raw material for matcha, in Japan. The number of young farmers who are involved in organic and natural cultivation, as well as the production of small quantities of a wide variety of unique teas, is increasing, and expectations are high for the region to take on these new challenges.
