Today it is common practice among most tea farmers to increase the amino acid content of tea leaves through heavy fertilization.  In contrast to this conventional idea of increasing umami through heavy fertilization, Toka’s approach is to support minimal fertilization. We believe that restrained and appropriate fertilization according to cultivar forms the basis of tea taste. All of Toka’s teas are grown without pesticides and chemical fertilizers, using organic farming methods. Any organic fertilizers used, such as rapeseed meal, are free of GMOs.
